This week we have been exploring the art work of Keith Haring, an American pop artist. We love his simple black line designs and vibrant colours.
Keith Haring used symbiotics in his artwork. That means that each drawing had a message to it. It was more than just a colourful cartoon. We created our own symbiotic cartoons using our school motto "Ní neart go cur le chéile" which means "strength in unity" in Gaeilge. We also took inspiration from our school crest (designed by our own teacher!!!) We tried to represent the words Confidence, Excellence, Respect and Tolerance using symbiotics. Today, we made our own chocolates for family and friends who are dear to us. We used decorative ice cube moulds. We melted hot chocolate in the microwave and poured it in to the moulds. We made our own paper boxes to hold them too.
One hundred years ago today, over 60 families were evicted from Merchant's Road, East Wall by the Dublin Warehouse Company because they had joined the unions. 5th an 6th class went to Merchant's Road today to look at the mural the East Wall History Group commissioned by Arthur the Artist to commemorate the event. Even though we were freezing, we really enjoyed the trip and learned lots about life in East Wall during the lockout.
We have written diary entries based on what we learned and we will upload these shortly. For the last few weeks we have been learning about the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and the fate of Pompeii. We looked at the letters written by Pliny the Younger (not Vinnie the Young Fella as some of us were calling him!) We have written eyewitness diaries in Gaeilge and English. We have also drawn a huge "fresco" of Pompeii.
We are making volcanoes in Science and learning all about them. Our teacher thinks it is taking us longer than nature to make them, maybe she'll explode herself before we finish! East Wall is a very haunted place. There are many ghost stories based in the area. We collected a few of them during October and created illustrations to go with them. Please read our stories and send us a comment! Click on our stories to read them. (if you dare!)
Taking inspiration from Van Gogh's "Sunflowers" we created our own close ups of sunflowers in pencil. (Some of us drew landscapes instead) We used PVA Glue to outline our designs and when the PVA dried, we used used pastels to shade in the areas. Scríobhamar ár gcead scéalta as Gaeilge an tseachtain seo chaite. Léigh scéalta uafais faoí Oiche Shamhna, púca agus peist! Bain sult as!!
