One hundred years ago today, over 60 families were evicted from Merchant's Road, East Wall by the Dublin Warehouse Company because they had joined the unions. 5th an 6th class went to Merchant's Road today to look at the mural the East Wall History Group commissioned by Arthur the Artist to commemorate the event. Even though we were freezing, we really enjoyed the trip and learned lots about life in East Wall during the lockout.

Our class recently completely the Stay Safe programme. Below is the list of topics we covered:
1) Feeling Safe and Unsafe 2) Bullying 3) Touch 4) Secrets and Telling 5) Strangers We learned so much from the Stay Safe programme and we feel confident and comfortable in any situation now because we know what to do. Our principal Mr. Heneghan presented us with a certificate for the great contributions we made. This Hallowe’en we had an art exhibition for our school. We invited our principal Mr. Heneghan (aka. Br. Heneghan) and some of our teachers to come and see our displays. We each made a 3-D Hallowe’en pumpkin from clay and a scary mask. We also made an art manual for our pumpkin to show others how to make one themselves. Scroll through our photos to see our individual displays.
Ps. Don’t be scared by our costumes, it was dress up day in school!!! On the 24th October, our class went to Trinity College to take part in a programme called “Science Forward.” We went on a tour of the campus and heard all about the history of Trinity College. We were brought into the science building where we saw the science labs but we weren’t allowed to go inside because there were too many dangerous chemicals!!
Our photographs show us doing the CSI experiment. We dressed in white lab coats and wore protective glasses. We were given two white containers of powder and had to figure out what they were. We put iodine into one of the containers and vinegar in the other. The two powders reacted immediately and through a process of elimination, we figured out the powder was baking soda. After our fantastic day in Trinity College, we all talked about going there some day to study Science! By Kathlyn, Chloe, Ciara, Hope and Jade. We did an experiment called “Potato Power.” We wanted to show that all living cells eventually dry up. Firstly, we cut a potato into two halves. We then scooped out a hollow in the centre of each half. We poured salt into the centre of one half and left the other half empty. We left the potatoes on a plate over night to see what would happen.
We predicted that the half with the salt would completely dry up and would turn black. The next day, we were shocked to find that the half with salt was filled with water. We thought someone had poured water into the potato! We even checked to see if someone has come into our classroom during the night!!! What really happened was that the salt drew the moisture out of the potato. The one without salt was actually the one that went black! Our prediction was completely wrong! Have a look at our before and after pictures. Roxane and Lyndsey. |
