To finish our study of the War of Independence and the Irish Civil War, we went of a field trip to Collins Barracks. We completed a history trail in the Soldiers and Chiefs Exhibition and explored what life was for new recruits when Collins Barracks was Richmond Military Barracks. We were all quite sad to see the uniform Michael Collins was wearing when he was short at Beal na Bláth in his native Cork as we had been studying all about him in history class. Unfortunately, we couldn't take photos of the exhibition but we took some later!. We also had chance to practice military drills using replica weapons. Two of our classmates challenged each other to a duel in the courtyard and the results were hilarious!!

We looked at the designs of Philip Treacy and then designed our own hats. Have a look at our work in progress. We hope to have a fashion show parading our new hats. Bring on the catwalk!!
We conducted fair tests on cress seeds to determine the conditions needed for germination and growth and here are the results from the East Wall jury:
Results: The seeds were examined after 14 days. 1) Seeds grown in light: These were the healthiest looking of all, with dark green petals and greenish-white stems. 2) Seeds kept in the dark: These had yellow petals and white stems. 3) Seedlings kept in the dark and grown with plant food contained in the tissue paper: These seeds failed to germinate. They were still brown in colour and were soft. Some of them had mould on them. Having finished the novel "Taking Sides" we were lucky to get the opportunity to meet the author Brian Gallagher (thanks to Marino Library) It was really interesting to hear the actual author talk about how he wrote the book, how he researched the historical details and how the publishing of a book happens. Well done to Courtney who came first in the Book Review Competition organised by the One Book, One Community committee.Photo Frames for those we Love!We used the scrafitti technique to create photo frames. They turned out fantastic!! |
