Today we were experimenting with acids and bases.
We started off by making an indicator liquid. Mr K boiled some red cabbage and then drained away the purple water. (Our room now stinks of cabbage!!) :-( We made some predictions and then used the purple liquid to test if our other solutions were acids, bases or neutral. Our Results Vinegar, lemon juice and orange juice are acids that turn the liquid pink or red. Sodium bicarbonate is a base and it turns the liquid green or blue. Water is neutral so the colour does not change. We then experimented by mixing acids and bases together. You can neutralise an acid by adding a base! Skip n Rope came to visit us just before midterm. Mark worked with all the classes and the students put on a demonstration at the end of the day to show off their amazing new skills! Check out their moves in the video below! ![]() This is the first episode of our radio station, Wallers FM. Episode 1 is a blast from the past where we bring you on a journey to the 1960's. We've been working really hard on it during the past few weeks. We have written the script, edited the content, recorded and produced the audio, designed the logo and hand picked the songs after a lot of exhausting research! You'll hear songs from bands like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Fleetwood Mac! There's even a special guest Donkey (you'll have to listen to find out about that though!) We hope you enjoy. Please leave a comment or make song requests below! :-) 6th Class went to the opening ceremony of the One Book, One Community project today in O’Connell’s School. Sixteen schools in the local area will all read the same book during the next six weeks. The book chosen this year is called ‘Trash’. It was written by Andy Mulligan and it has just been made into a movie! Over the next few weeks we will take part in competitions and quizzes based on the book. The first competition was to design a bookmark based on the book and project. One of the primary school winners was a girl in our class! The boys and girls came home with a lovely goody bag today and they also got to meet the special guest Aodhán Ó Ríordáin. RTÉ were also there recording and we might be on News2Day next Monday!
We can’t wait to read the book! 6th Class have been working really hard with Mr. Travers for the past 10 weeks researching, designing, editing and publishing their very own technology magazines!

On Friday we had lots of fun experimenting with carbon dioxide gas (also called CO2) in our classroom. It's colourless and odourless but in its solid form, CO2 becomes dry ice. It is really cold ( -78 degrees!! ) and we had to wear special gloves to hold it. At the end of the day we had a huge CO2 bubble fight. Our teacher wasn't very happy when he saw the slippy mess but we helped him clean it up! :-) (Sorry Mr. K!!) It was a really fun day and we all went home smiling!
We also put on demonstrations for the younger classes. Hopefully they enjoyed it as much as we did! We have posted two cool (pun intended) dry ice videos on our Twitter page. Check them out below along with some pics of our day! :-)
Amazing news! One of our stories has been selected for the 100WC Showcase.
(Check out our 100WC post to find out more about the challenge!) Each week, 5 or 6 of the very best stories from around the world are selected and displayed on the special Showcase Page. The competition is really tough with thousands of entries from children in many different countries, but one of our girls has made the prestigious list! What a proud moment for her and all of 6th Class!! She will be receiving her very special certificate and prize during the October Pupil of the Month assembly. You can read the winning story here. |
