As part of our school Health and Well-being Month, 5th Class have been put in charge of setting up and managing our ‘Walk on Wednesday’ track in the senior yard. The boys and girls measured the track length using trundle wheels (it’s a 70m track) and they also helped calculate and create a chart with target distances for all the groups. They made a poster for the start line and even made displays and a safety zone where parents can leave buggies/prams. Some of the class even volunteered to lead the walks for the junior classes. Well done boys and girls!
We’ve finally finished the big collage of our school! We used recycled bits of scrap paper, old magazines, and old newspapers! It took a long time (we started late November!!) but we’re really happy with the finished picture.
Today we explored why fire needs oxygen to burn. We even managed to relight a candle without touching the wick! When you blow out a candle the trail of smoke released by the smouldering wick still contains a bit of wax that hasn't fully burned. We used this to relight it! We created our own sudoku puzzles in computer class today using Microsoft Excel! We had lots of fun trying to solve them! #maths
We made rainbow fish in art this week. We started by making our own marbled paper (using marbling ink, water, and white paper). It turned out really great! When it dried, we used it to make scales to decorate our fish!
A huge thanks to our amazing caretaker Noel who made these fantastic cubby spaces for our room. We keep all our books, equipment and school bag in the cubby freeing up lots of extra space around the room! Our teacher is not a fan of the Liverpool decorations though!!
We have some fantastic artists in 5th Class. The boys and girls have created some amazing winter art chalk scenes. Maith sibh! The theme for Science Week this year was Climate Action (with a focus on understanding climate change, how science and technology can help us create a positive climate future, and the impact we as individuals can have on climate change). We set up lots of science stations in 5th class on Friday, and many of our experiments were linked to climate change and our ever changing weather. We made a real cloud in a jar, created a tornado in a bottle, explored water density and rising sea levels, and we examined the dangers of using non-recyclable plastics. We also had lots of fun building some rockets, making lava lamps, exploring surface tension, testing various items for starch, and we even set up a clock powered by just a potato!! Cleaning up at the end of the day. . . not so fun! We've been learning all about Pompeii this month in 5th Class. We made a comic to show the events that took place on the 24th August 79 AD. We had a lot of fun dressing up in our Togas. We also built our own Pompeii City out of Lego and then used flour to recreate the falling volcanic ash. We even had a special guest teacher come in to help us with our work. Thanks again Ms Ni Cassaithe!! |
