We were inspired by the work of the famous Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky and decided to base our Valentine's Day art on his famous piece 'Squares with Concentric circles'. Even though the shape is a bit tricky, the children loved getting to draw love hearts and use the bright neon colours!

We have been learning all about The Titanic. The children have been absolutely hooked on this topic!!! We decided to make fact files to put all our information in one place - we were lucky to have some 6th class children in to help us :) We learnt about how the New Year is celebrated in different countries. We celebrated the Chinese New Year by making our own lanterns! 2020 is the year of the RAT in China! I set the children the task of collecting 27 milk/juice cartons in November with the intention of recycling them and turning them into gingerbread houses. Some of the children took their job very seriously - so a big thanks to the parents who sent them in (some kids even told me they emptied their milk into another jug just so they could bring one in). It was a lengthy process with some minor bumps along the road but we got there in the end and obviously I might be a little biased but I think they turned out great! The kids are very excited to take them home and show them off! Well done boys and girls :-) We have learnt all about the meaning of advent and the importance of 'waiting'. We learnt about the different candles that are lit on the advent wreath each week We decided to make our own advent calendar with acts of kindness written inside. Each day a child opens up the card and we try our best to carry out that act each day. The children had lots of fun designing their own advent card.
The kids made the sweetest winter penguins. I love how unique each one is! Some penguins clearly eat more fish than others!!! One thing I have learnt from this class is they LOVE experiments! The Leaky bag experiment: Alka Seltzer, Oil & Water experiment: ![]() We were learning about materials a few weeks ago and we got into a big discussion about plastic. We watched a clip called 'A Whale's Tale' (linked below) and it got us thinking a lot. The children came out with the most amazing ideas about reducing plastic and we talked about what we do already to help save our planet and the little things we could change daily to help global warming and climate change. Here are some things we came up with:
The future is bright with these mini-environmentalists paving the way! We have been very busy in first class learning numbers to 100! We have been playing lots of maths games in class. We love our Bingo board game the most! It helps up recognise lots of bigger numbers. We have been counting in 1',s, 2's, 5's and 10's and use the 'Splat square' to help us! Recently, we have been learning 2-D shapes and counting how many corners/sides they have. In PE, we made numbers using our bodies. Check out some of the pictures to see what we have been getting up to :) https://www.primarygames.co.uk/pg2/splat/splatsq100.html |
