Last month we had a surprise visitor to our school - the Sam Maguire Cup! We all dressed in blue and went to the hall where we waited in anticipation for the big arrival! Every child in our school was there and the excitement went through the roof! The children were chanting "DUB-LIN" over and over until finally we saw a glimpse of silver come down the corridor.
One of the Dublin players David Byrne brought the Sam Maguire into the hall and we all sang "Molly Malone" as they came in. David spoke to the children about playing sport and the huge amount of training that went into their big win. The children asked some fantastic questions and we finished up our afternoon with a class photo with the cup. It was a super day! See our photos below!

A busy but wonderful day was had on Thursday the 15th of December between having a cake sale organised by parents in the library and two plays performed in the gym by 1st and 2nd class. A huge well done to all involved! 20/12/16 An overview of the fantastic play the junior classes did today called 'Whoops a Daisy Angel'. All the children were brilliant. Our parents will be in for a treat tomorrow. Well done to all the teachers for the hard work in preparing the boys and girls for the stage! Our new social media policy is available to read below. In today's modern society our children and pupils spend huge amounts of time on the internet. As parents and teachers it is vital that we ensure their online safety and that they are well protected from the dangers of the internet in particular cyberbullying. This policy helps us become more aware of the importance of safety online and also gives a ranges of useful strategies and suggestions to protect them from cyberbullying so that they can enjoy their time "surfing the net!" ![]()
This month every school in the country will be celebrating Proclamation Day on March 15th, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising.
In our school we are all learning "Amhrán na bhFiann" (National Anthem) and every class will perform in a school concert on Proclamation Day. There will be a mixture of talent displayed by our children with some classes singing Irish songs, reciting Irish poetry and even dancing traditional Irish dances. 6th class will be rewriting the Proclamation of 1916 and reading the new 2016 version to everyone, as written by our young generation of today!Ms. Kennedy will raise the Irish flag at 1.45pm and it will fly over our school to remember the Easter Rising of 1916. The school will close at 12 noon on March 16th to celebrate both St. Patrick's Day and the Easter holidays. We wish everyone a happy and safe Easter and will see you all back in school on Monday 4th April. Last Friday, the children from 4th, 5th and 6th class were treated to the premiere performance of a song to celebrate the 1911 schoolboys' strike which happened here in this school just over a century ago.
Paul O'Brien, a musician native to East Wall but now living in The Netherlands, composed the song based on old newspaper cuttings and school registers. The song tells of how the young boys organised a mass boycott of the school for a number of days in order to highlight the huge cost of schoolbooks and the use of corporal punishment. The event, which was recorded by Near TV, was organised by the East Wall History Group. 6th Class went to the opening ceremony of the One Book, One Community project today in O’Connell’s School. Sixteen schools in the local area will all read the same book during the next six weeks. The book chosen this year is called ‘Trash’. It was written by Andy Mulligan and it has just been made into a movie! Over the next few weeks we will take part in competitions and quizzes based on the book. The first competition was to design a bookmark based on the book and project. One of the primary school winners was a girl in our class! The boys and girls came home with a lovely goody bag today and they also got to meet the special guest Aodhán Ó Ríordáin. RTÉ were also there recording and we might be on News2Day next Monday!
We can’t wait to read the book! Happy New Year to you all! We hope you had a wonderful Christmas and are looking forward to 2016.
Thank you for all your support during the month of December. The choir and Ms O'Connor deserve a special thanks for performing so well at the Christmas Fair and A&L Goodbody's. Congratulations to the infant classes on their wonderfully entertaining nativity play, and to 6th Class for their performance of 'Babushka'. We hope you enjoyed the carol service. Thank you to Father Hugh for allowing us to use the church as this made it a very special occasion. We would also like to thank Stephen Kelly for being such a great DJ at the Christmas disco. The children all had a fantastic time. On the 10th of November, St. Joseph's was presented with its Green Flag. There was a flag raising ceremony at the front of the school. Thanks to all the parents and members of the Board of Management who attended this special event. A very special thanks to the children from the Green School Committee. It is because of all their hard work and commitment that St. Joseph's has been awarded this flag. Keep up the good work everybody and continue to reduce, re-use and recycle!
On the 16th of October, Sam Maguire came to East Wall. He was brought to school by Jack Mc Caffrey. We all gave him a very loud cheer and congratulated Jack and the rest of the Dubs for winning the All Ireland football championship Our new school playground was officially opened on the 19th of June. Over 150 people attended the opening ceremony. Among the guests were parents, ex staff members, the minister for sport, the president of the GAA and the lord mayor. Everyone was very impressed by the playground, especially the children from the junior classes. |
